Seeking Fatherhood Stories for Show the week of Father’s Day

Do you have a story to tell about fatherhood? Now’s the time!

Recently, while helping get the word out about a live storytelling event called Listen to Your Mother that features stories about motherhood to be held the week of Mother’s Day, several dads approached me. What about fathers? We’ve got some great stories, too!

I know you do. So bring them on. We’d love to consider your stories about fatherhood or fathers for a live, staged reading to be held Tuesday, June 10, 2014, the week of Father’s Day, at Kenan Auditorium at William Peace College in Raleigh, NC. I will be co-producing this show with my daughter’s basketball coach, Bruce Ham, who tells a pretty moving story himself in his recent memoir, Laughter, Tears and Braids: A Father’s Journey Through Losing His Wife to Cancer. A portion of proceeds will go to benefit Single Fathers Due to Cancer.

Do you have an important story to tell? Here’s your opportunity. Sometimes that’s all we need to prompt us to finally pen that story that’s been rattling around in the back of the brain, something important, meaningful, and just waiting for a deadline to force it out.

Just like curators of an exhibit, we’re looking for a wide range of stories, an eclectic mix of perspectives and emotions that will hit both the high and low notes, as well as all the notes between. You need not be a father yourself to submit. You may want to tell a story about your father or grandfather.

The constraints: You have 3 to 5 minutes and the pieces are due soon – by April 27, 2014. We will hold auditions on Tuesday, April 29, from 7 to 9 p.m., and announce the cast by May 2. There will be an informal dress rehearsal on Tuesday, May 20, so all cast members can meet one another, and a tech rehearsal on Monday, June 9. The show will be held Tuesday, June 10. As soon as the cast is announced, tickets will go on sale.
